How to add a travel eSIM to your iPhone: QR code installation, manual entry, labelling lines, data roaming and a post-install checklist.
Contents
iPhone XS and later models support eSIM. Setup takes a few minutes; the only requirement is an internet connection (Wi-Fi) during installation.
Before you start
- Make sure your phone is eSIM compatible and carrier-unlocked.
- Update iOS.
- Have the QR code from your order email ready on another screen or printed. Your QR code also appears on the My eSIMs page of your account.
Installing with a QR code
- Go to Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) > Add eSIM.
- Tap Use QR Code and point the camera at the code.
- On the “Add Cellular Plan” screen, tap Continue.
- Give the line a name, for example “Travel”. Leave your main line as “Personal”.
- Default line: choose your main line for calls and iMessage.
- Cellular data: choose the travel eSIM and keep “Allow Cellular Data Switching” off.
Manual installation
If you cannot scan the QR code, use Add eSIM > Enter Details Manually and type the SM-DP+ address and activation code from the email.
Travel day
- When you land, go to Settings > Cellular > Travel line > Data Roaming and switch it on.
- Keep data roaming off on your main line.
- If no connection appears within a few minutes, toggle airplane mode on and off.
Frequently asked questions
I get a “This code is no longer valid” error.
The QR code has most likely been used already. Check whether the profile is already installed on your phone; if the problem persists, contact our support team.
Does the plan start right after installation?
For most plans, validity starts at the first network connection in the destination country. Details are on each plan page. If you have problems, see our eSIM troubleshooting guide.
