Travel eSIM on Smartwatches, Tablets and Laptops
Do iPads, Android tablets, eSIM laptops and smartwatches support travel eSIMs? What works on which device, and what the limits are.
eSIM is not only found in phones: tablets, some laptops and smartwatches have it too. But travel eSIMs do not work the same way on every type of device.
Tablets (iPad and Android)
Most cellular iPads and some Android tablets support eSIM. A travel eSIM installs with a QR code just like on a phone. Because tablets only use data, travel plans suit them very well — ideal for families who want separate internet for the kids’ tablet.
Laptops with eSIM
Some Windows laptops come with an LTE/5G modem and eSIM. You can add an eSIM profile under Settings > Network & Internet > Cellular. Compatibility depends on the model and modem maker; for most people, a hotspot from the phone is more practical.
Smartwatches
Cellular smartwatches (such as Apple Watch Cellular) usually use a special setup that shares the paired phone’s carrier line. As a result, travel eSIMs usually cannot be installed on smartwatches. While connected to your phone via Bluetooth, the watch keeps receiving notifications through your phone’s eSIM data.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use the same eSIM on my phone and tablet?
No. Each device needs its own eSIM; alternatively, share a hotspot from your phone.
Will my watch use the internet away from my phone?
Since a travel eSIM cannot be installed on the watch, it can only connect via Wi-Fi when away from your phone.
