5G Abroad: When Does Your eSIM Connect to 5G?
Three conditions for using 5G with a travel eSIM: a 5G-enabled plan, a compatible phone and coverage. How it differs from 4G, battery use and realistic expectations.
5G has become widespread in city centres in many countries. But to connect to 5G with a travel eSIM, three conditions must be met at the same time.
Three conditions for 5G
- The plan must support 5G. The plan page states the network type (4G/5G).
- The phone must be 5G-capable. Most recent iPhone, Samsung and Pixel models are, and the phone must also support the country’s 5G bands.
- There must be 5G coverage where you are. 5G is mostly found in large cities; in rural areas, the phone switches to 4G automatically.
Isn’t 4G enough?
For most travel use, 4G is more than enough: maps, messaging, social media and video calls work fine. The difference with 5G shows when uploading large files, in crowded areas and while working remotely.
| Use | 4G | 5G |
|---|---|---|
| Maps and messaging | Enough | Enough |
| HD video calls | Good | Very good |
| Large file uploads | Average | Fast |
Battery and data use
5G can use more battery in some situations. As speed goes up, video quality may increase automatically, so data runs out faster. On iPhone, the “5G Auto” setting balances battery and speed for you.
Frequently asked questions
I don’t see a 5G icon — is the plan not working?
It is working; most likely there is no 5G where you are, or the plan is limited to 4G. The connection continues over 4G.
Are 5G plans more expensive?
Prices vary by plan. The plan page shows the network type alongside the price.
