What Is a Carrier Lock (SIM Lock)? Is Your Phone eSIM-Ready?
Carrier-locked phones may not accept a travel eSIM. How to tell if your phone is locked, how to unlock it and what to check before you travel.
Contents
Some phones, especially those bought on contract or with a carrier promotion, are locked to work only with one carrier’s lines. This “carrier lock” can stop a travel eSIM from working.
How do I know if it is locked?
- iPhone: Settings > General > About > if “Carrier Lock” says “No SIM restrictions”, it is unlocked.
- Android: if you can insert another carrier’s SIM and connect, it is unlocked. Some models also show the status under Settings > Connections > Mobile networks.
How to remove the lock
The carrier that sold you the phone removes the lock. It is usually free if your contract has ended or the device is paid off. Apply at least a few days before your trip; processing times vary.
Pre-trip checklist
- Does your phone support eSIM?
- Is it carrier-locked?
- Is iOS or Android up to date?
- Did you install the QR code at home?
Frequently asked questions
What happens if I install an eSIM on a locked phone?
Installation may complete, but the line shows “SIM not supported” or does not connect. Check the lock before you buy.
Is a carrier lock the same as IMEI registration?
No. IMEI registration rules are a separate, country-specific topic for using local SIMs long term; a travel eSIM works on roaming.
