To work on a laptop abroad or get the kids’ tablet online, you can use your phone as a personal hotspot. However, hotspot support is not the same on every plan.

Does your plan support hotspot?

Hotspot support varies by provider and plan. Check the details on the plan page before buying. If supported, there is no extra charge; shared data comes out of your plan.

How to turn it on

  • iPhone: Settings > Personal Hotspot > “Allow Others to Join”.
  • Android: Settings > Connections (or Network & internet) > Mobile Hotspot.
  • Set a strong password and switch it off when not in use.

How quickly does data run out?

Computers use far more data than phones: operating system updates, cloud backups and app updates in the background can use gigabytes per hour.

Frequently asked questions

Does hotspot drain my battery?

Yes, a hotspot uses battery quickly. Keep the phone charging during long sessions.

Is one eSIM enough for my family?

For short sharing, yes; but if everyone goes in different directions, a separate eSIM for each phone is more practical. Details: family travel guide.
