Dual SIM Guide: Keep Your Home Number, Use eSIM Data
The right settings to receive calls and SMS on your main number abroad while using data from your eSIM: default line, data switching and roaming control.
Contents
The most common travel question: “Can I still receive my bank SMS codes?” Yes. Most eSIM-capable phones run two lines together. What matters is setting which line carries your data.
The right setup (3 settings)
- Mobile data line: in Settings, choose the travel eSIM for “Mobile data”.
- Data switching: turn off “Allow Cellular Data Switching” on iPhone; otherwise the phone may jump to your main line when the signal weakens and trigger roaming charges.
- Data roaming: on for the eSIM line, off for the main line.
What about calls and SMS?
With your main line on, incoming SMS abroad (including bank verification codes) are usually free. Incoming and outgoing calls follow your carrier’s roaming tariff. To avoid costs, make calls with apps such as WhatsApp or FaceTime.
Default line and messaging apps
- Default voice line: keep your main line, so calls show your own number.
- WhatsApp: tied to your number, not the SIM. Even with data from the eSIM, your account stays the same. More: does your WhatsApp number change abroad?
Which phones support it?
Many models, such as iPhone XS and later, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later and Google Pixel 3 and later, can run a physical SIM plus an eSIM. Check yours on the device compatibility page.
Frequently asked questions
Can both lines use the internet at the same time?
No. Mobile data comes from one line at a time; you choose which.
Should I switch off my main line completely?
Not necessary. Turning off its data roaming is enough. If you do not want SMS either, you can temporarily disable the main line.
