Does Your WhatsApp Number Change When You Use an eSIM?
Installing a travel eSIM does not change your number on WhatsApp, Telegram or iMessage. Here is why, and what to watch out for abroad.

One of the most common traveller questions: “If I install an eSIM, will WhatsApp switch to a new number?” Short answer: No.
Why it does not change
A WhatsApp account is tied to a phone number, not to a SIM card. Once set up, the app runs over an internet connection; it does not matter whether that connection comes from Wi-Fi, your home line or a travel eSIM. Travel eSIMs are mostly data-only, so they do not give you a new number anyway.
Telegram, iMessage and FaceTime
- Telegram: works the same way; your number does not change.
- iMessage and FaceTime: work with your phone number and Apple ID. In Settings, make sure your main line is selected for iMessage.
Things to keep in mind
- Do not delete and reinstall WhatsApp. Re-verification requires an SMS to your main number.
- If you keep your main line on, verification SMS still arrive abroad. See dual SIM guide.
- Video calls use data: an hour of video calling can use around 300–800 MB.
- Internet-based calling may be restricted in some countries; we cover this in our UAE guide, for example.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to use “Change number” in WhatsApp?
No. Keep using it without changing any settings.
Will WhatsApp work if I turn off my main line?
Yes, as long as you have internet. Your line only needs to be on for SMS if re-verification is required.
