Is eSIM Safe? A Guide to SIM Cloning and Fraud Protection
Is an eSIM safer than a physical SIM? The advantages of eSIM against SIM cloning, fake QR codes and lost phones, and the risks you should still watch for.
An eSIM is a digital SIM profile running on a chip built into the phone. Because it cannot be removed and put into another device, it is more resistant than a physical SIM to many kinds of attack.
Security advantages of eSIM
- Physical theft is harder: nobody can pop out the SIM and use it in another phone.
- Encrypted installation: the profile is downloaded from the operator’s server over an encrypted connection.
- Control over a lost phone: you can lock and wipe the device remotely; the line cannot be used in another phone.
Risks to watch for
- Fake QR codes: buy eSIMs only from sellers you trust. Do not scan unexpected QR codes sent by e-mail or message.
- SIM swap fraud: attackers may call your carrier and try to move your number to their own eSIM. Set a carrier PIN on your main line.
- Two-factor authentication: where possible, use an authenticator app instead of SMS.
After you buy
Your QR code and installation details are stored safely on the My eSIMs page. Once installed, you do not need the code again.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if someone gets my QR code?
An uninstalled code could be loaded onto another device. Do not share it; if in doubt, contact our support team right away.
Does a travel eSIM affect my main number?
No. A travel eSIM is a data line only; your main number and accounts stay separate.
