Germany eSIM Guide: Data in Berlin, Munich and on Trains
An eSIM for trade fairs, business trips or city breaks in Germany: networks, connectivity on trains, how much data you need and setup advice.
Contents
Germany is one of the most visited countries for trade fairs, business meetings and family visits. You need data constantly for transit apps, Deutsche Bahn tickets and maps. With an eSIM your phone connects as soon as you land in Frankfurt or Munich.
Networks and coverage
Germany has three major networks: Telekom, Vodafone and O2 (Telefónica). Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne and Frankfurt have fast 4G/5G. Rural areas and some intercity rail lines still have occasional dead spots — Germans call them “Funkloch”.
Staying online on trains
ICE trains offer free Wi-Fi, but it slows down at peak times. Using your eSIM data, and a hotspot for your laptop if needed, is usually more stable. Before long journeys, save your ticket and presentation files offline.
How much data do you need?
- 3–4 day trade fair visit: 3–5 GB (email, maps, messaging).
- One-week city break: 5–10 GB.
- Several countries (Austria, the Netherlands, France): Europe plans cross borders with a single QR code.
Setup
- Check that your phone supports eSIM.
- Scan the QR code on Wi-Fi before you leave.
- When you land in Germany, turn on data roaming for the eSIM line and off for your main line.
Frequently asked questions
Does a Germany plan work in Austria?
Country plans are valid only in Germany. If you are crossing into Austria or Switzerland, pick a regional Europe plan after checking the countries it covers.
Can I use my phone as a hotspot for a laptop?
Most plans allow it; check the hotspot information on the plan page and remember that large downloads use data quickly.
