Maldives eSIM Guide: Don’t Depend on Resort Wi-Fi
If resort Wi-Fi in the Maldives is slow or pricey, connect with an eSIM: Dhiraagu and Ooredoo coverage, seaplane transfers and how much data you need.
In the Maldives most of your holiday is spent on a resort island, and most resorts offer Wi-Fi. But Wi-Fi can be weak in villas and on the beach, and some resorts charge for fast internet. With an eSIM on the mobile network, you are not dependent on the resort network for photo sharing and video calls.
Networks and coverage
There are two carriers: Dhiraagu and Ooredoo. Malé, Hulhumalé and the airport island have strong 4G/5G. Most resort islands have coverage, but it varies with the atoll’s location and the size of the resort. On seaplane and speedboat transfers the connection can drop in open water.
How much data do you need?
- 5–7 night honeymoon or holiday: 5 GB is enough for most people.
- Lots of video and video calls: 10 GB or more.
- Remote work: use resort Wi-Fi and your eSIM together; when one drops, the other takes over.
Practical tips
- Data prices in the Maldives are higher than elsewhere; choose a plan that matches realistic usage.
- You can take your phone snorkelling in a waterproof case, but there may be no signal on the boat.
- If you have a layover in Dubai, Doha or Istanbul, plan connectivity for those countries separately or look at global plans.
Frequently asked questions
My resort is on a remote atoll — will the eSIM work?
Most resort islands are covered; we recommend asking the hotel about mobile signal before booking.
When should I install the eSIM?
Install it at home before your flight; when you land at Velana Airport, just turn on data roaming.
