China eSIM Guide: Staying Connected in Beijing, Shanghai and Beyond
What to know before you go to China: networks, app access, setting up WeChat and Alipay, how much data you need and eSIM installation.
Contents
In China, daily life runs almost entirely on mobile apps: payments, taxis, food delivery and even museum entry. Preparation before the trip therefore matters more than elsewhere. An eSIM connects you to this digital ecosystem the moment you land in Beijing or Shanghai.
Networks and coverage
China’s carriers are China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom. Coverage in big cities and along high-speed rail lines is excellent. Speeds may drop in remote western regions and mountain areas.
About app access
Access to some foreign apps and websites is restricted from local networks in China. Because international roaming eSIMs often route traffic through gateways abroad, the experience may differ from a local SIM. Read the network and coverage details on the plan page and follow local rules.
Before you go
- Install WeChat and Alipay and add your foreign card; in many places they are used instead of cash.
- Download offline translation packs.
- Save your hotel address in Chinese on your phone so you can show it to taxi drivers.
- Install the QR code at home and check device compatibility.
How much data do you need?
- One week, Beijing + Shanghai: 5–10 GB.
- Two weeks, several cities and high-speed trains: 15 GB.
- Also visiting Hong Kong or Macau? Check plan coverage or look at Asia plans.
